Documenting Connections

Early this week my friend, Carrie posted these 3 photos to Instagram. She used them to illustrate her post, which reads: Happy first day of nursing school to my little girl! So proud of you and all your hard work and determination. This dream of yours goes all the way back to when McKay (her little brother) let you practice on him in the hospital with your pretend “doctor’s kit.” He was always such a willing patient. You got this pretty girl!

What Carrie has done here is create a connection between the present moment and an earlier time/memory. THIS is an example of connected storytelling and I LOVE it.

What do cows have to do with nursing students? You’ll have to listen to find out, but I will say that confess my LOVE for “dairy air” or the smell of COWS—which always reminds me of my childhood and my Grandpa Hall.

One of my early articles for Creating Keepsakes Magazine was titled, What’s the Connection. I wrote it after developing something I called, Documenting Connections—phrases that help you craft more interesting and compelling stories by adding a little more—more memories, facts, coincidences, definitions, perspective and historical details. A Documenting Connection can be used in any storytelling format, on a blog, in a social media post, on a scrapbook page—even in conversation! Now, almost 18 years later I’ve brought these useful phrases back to life in my Storyteller how-to book at the Story FYI stamp set.

And, just for you—my amazing listeners—I created a printable version of my Documenting Connections, so that you can begin using them right now—in which ever way you would like! CLICK HERE.

Yay! I’ll be teaching at RootsTech 2020 in SLC, Utah. Learn more and register HERE.
