Let's be one of the Helpers!

Like most of you I am heartbroken to hear of the separation of families that has occured on our southern borders and I am SO GRATEFUL that officials are now working to reunite children and parents. As usual when these kinds of issues arise there is much divisiveness and partisan politics in the news and on social media. In an effort to educate myself and better understand the circumstances, I have spent the last few days reading articles and commentary on both sides. I've decided that for me, the best thing I can do is try and be a helper and involve my kids in that effort.

I asked Addie to select 5 of her (many) stuffed animals. We are boxing these up and sending them directly to the Central Arizona Detention Center at 1155 N Pinal Pkwy, Florence, AZ 85132. I know that there are good people employed there that will be able to share these animals with children who need them. We are attaching a note and a small US flag.

Our notes read, "Los Estados Unidos les quieren a los niños, Estamos orando por tu familia Amor, la familia Julian" Which translates as, The United States loves little children. We are praying for your family. Love the Julian Family.

I think the truly shocking and heartbreaking fact that has emerged for me to better understand is that there are parents willing to be separated from their children in the hope that they can secure them a better future, or in some cases a future at all. I honestly cannot fathom a situation that would motivate me to make or risk that kind of sacrifice.

We are a nation of immigrants. I pray that we NEVER FORGET how blessed we are and that as concerned citizens we work together towards sustaining our role in the world, so that we can continue to be a land that welcomes all.

As always, I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts.
